How to Measure an Alcove for a Wardrobe? Avoid Costly Mistakes
Accurate alcove measurement is the foundation of a successful wardrobe project. We'll show you where and how to measure to avoid costly mistakes.
Why Measurements Matter So Much
Incorrect measurements are the most common cause of problems when building a custom wardrobe. Too large won't fit, too small leaves ugly gaps.
What You'll Need
- Tape measure (minimum 3m, preferably 5m)
- Spirit level
- Paper and pen
- Optionally: laser level
Step 1: Measuring Width
Measure in three places:
- At floor level
- At 100 cm height
- At ceiling
Important: Record the SHORTEST measurement. This is your maximum wardrobe width.
Why Three Measurements?
Walls are rarely perfectly parallel. A 1-2 cm difference is normal in construction.
Step 2: Measuring Height
Measure in three places:
- At left wall
- In the center
- At right wall
Important: Again, record the SHORTEST measurement.
Remember:
- Baseboards (will they stay or be removed)
- Suspended ceiling
- Floor unevenness
Step 3: Measuring Depth
Check depth at several points. Watch for:
- Protruding pipes
- Electrical outlets
- Light switches
- Ventilation grilles
Step 4: Check Wall Verticality
Use a spirit level or plumb line. Place against wall and check:
- Is the wall vertical
- Which direction it "leans"
How Much to Subtract?
For Freestanding Wardrobe:
- Width: subtract 1-2 cm
- Height: subtract 1-2 cm
- Depth: leave room for plinths
For Built-in Wardrobe:
- Width: subtract 0.5-1 cm
- Height: as needed (can use trim strips)
Common Mistakes
❌ Measuring Only Once
Walls aren't perfectly even. One measurement isn't enough.
❌ Forgetting Baseboards
A forgotten baseboard is 1-2 cm difference.
❌ Measuring With Furniture Present
Remove old furniture before measuring - they may hide irregularities.
❌ Rounding Up
Always round DOWN. A small gap is better than a wardrobe that won't fit.
